Baltimore -- Loyola University Maryland scored both of its goals in the second half on Sunday afternoon to defeat visiting Rice University, 2-0 and move to 4-0-0 at home this season.
Neither team recorded a shot in the first ten minutes, but he Greyhounds had a great opportunity on goal later only to see the Owls (2-4 overall) make a goal-line clearance. The teams headed to halftime tied, 0-0.
It did not take the Greyhounds long to get on the board in the second half, as they converted on a corner kick in the 47th minute.
Baylee DeSmit sent the ball into the box where
Alex Searing headed it towards goal. An Owls defender made another goal-line save, but
Olivia Quaranta was able to flick in the loose ball in for her second goal of the season.
From there, the Owls were on the attack as they had seven shots in the second half.
Paige Sim made several diving punch outs, and the Greyhounds continued to maintain their shutout. In the 86th minute, DeSmit sent in a ball off of a free kick, where
Nele Raap managed to get her head on the ball and flick the ball over the goalies head for her first career goal to secure the Greyhounds 2-0 win.
Sim had three saves on the afternoon.
The Greyhounds will be back at home next Sunday, capping their three-game homestand with a non-conference matchup against Longwood.
