Baltimore -- The Therien sisters were both in double figures on the night for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, but the Greyhounds could not overcome a first half deficit, as the Army West Point Black Knights held on to the 55-45 win.
Lex Therien scored on a driving layup with 7:01 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the Black Knights (4-9 overall, 1-2 Patriot League) lead down to eight points. Army responded with a 7-0 run over the next 3:21 of game time to retake a 15-point lead.
Over the final three minutes of game time, the Greyhounds (6-8 overall, 1-2 Patriot League) defense stepped up, forcing three turnovers, as they went on a 7-2 run to close out the game, but the late rally ran out of time, as the Black Knights secured the away win.
The Greyhounds started the third quarter on a tear, as they made each of their first six shots of the quarter, and trailed 42-34 with 4:58 remaining in the third quarter. Despite the hot shooting to start the quarter, Army matched each of their shots, as Loyola could not cut into their lead, as they trailed 46-36 going into the fourth quarter.
Lex Therien was tied for a game-high with 14 points, while
Ava Therien had 12 points on the night. Both Therien's also had a team-high seven rebounds each.
Cristina Garcia had a career-high four steals on the night.
Kya Smith led the Black Knights with 14 points and 16 rebounds on the night.
Loyola will be back in action on Saturday, as they travel to face off against the Boston Terriers.
