Meliah Van-Otoo scored a career-high 13 points for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, but the visiting Holy Cross Crusaders pulled away in the second quarter, as they held on for a 71-51 win in Patriot League play.
The Crusaders (12-5 overall, 6-0 Patriot League) started the game strong in the first quarter, jumping out to a 15-5 lead with four minutes remaining in the quarter. Despite the Greyhounds (7-10 overall, 2-4 Patriot League) forcing seven turnovers in the opening quarter, they struggled from the field, scoring just nine points in the opening quarter.
Holy Cross continued their strong start to the game, as they opened the second quarter on a 12-5 run to extend their lead to 33-16.
Kimmie Hicks knocked down a three-pointer, followed by a
Lex Therien layup, as Loyola trailed 41-21 at halftime.
Despite holding the Crusaders to just 12 points in the third quarter, the Greyhounds offense could not find any rhythm, as they could not cut into the Crusaders lead in the second half, as the Crusaders remain undefeated in Patriot League play.
Meliah Van-Otoo had a career-high 13 points and five steals on the afternoon.
Kimmie Hicks had eight points, while
Lex Therien,
Cristina Garcia, and Laura Salmeron each had seven points each.
Bronagh Power-Cassidy had a game-high 20 points for the Crusaders, while Simone Foreman had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Greyhounds are back in action next Wednesday, when they travel to face off against Lafayette at 7:00 PM.
