Bethlehem – Laura Salmeron and
Ava Therien scored career-high's for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as they Greyhounds held on to win 73-65 over Lehigh University in a Patriot League contest.
Laura Salmeron knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the afternoon with 8:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, to kickstart a 8-2 Loyola run, as the Greyhounds (6-7 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) retook the lead, 53-51.
Salmeron continued her career day, as she scored on back-to-back possessions to extend the Loyola lead to 62-55 with 5:45 remaining.
The Mountain Hawks' (8-5 overall, 0-2 Patriot League) Lily Fandre hit a three-pointer to draw within four points, but
Lex Therien scored four straight Loyola points to retake a seven-point lead.
Therien would hit one more layup with 1:10 remaining to retake a 10-point lead, as the Greyhounds held on to win.
Ava Therien had a big third quarter for the Greyhounds, scoring 8 of her 17 points in the quarter, as teams were tied 48-48 heading into the fourth quarter.
Salmeron had her best half of the season, scoring 13 points in the first half, including three three-pointers.
With the win, Loyola moves to 1-1 in Patriot League play, as Lehigh falls to 0-2 in Patriot League play.
With 25 points in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds tied a program-high for most points in a quarter and in the fourth quarter, tied with 25 points in the fourth quarter against Binghamton this season.
Laura Salmeron scored a career-high 20 points on the afternoon, as
Ava Therien also scored a career-high with 17 points.
Lex Therien scored 20 points for the third straight game, to go along with 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
Kelly Ratigan was also in double figures with 10 points. Ratigan had a team-high four assists on the afternoon.
Lily Fandre had a game-high 25 points on the day for the Mountain Hawks.
The Greyhounds will continue Patriot League play on Wednesday, as they will host Army West Point at 7:00 PM.
