Strong Performance from Women's Soccer Gives them 3-0 Win Over Army

Baltimore -- The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team scored three goals in a 7:05 minute span in the second half en route to a big 3-0 win over Army West Point on Friday night to pick up their first Patriot League win of the season.

Asma Merzougui scored the opening goal for the Greyhounds (5-3-5 overall, 1-1-3 Patriot League) in the 53rd minute, as Elizabeth Gallagher controlled the ball off of a corner kick, before passing the ball to Merzougui in the box, as she settled the ball and fired the ball in for her second goal of the season.

Loyola responded with another goal just three and a half minutes later, as Baylee DeSmit drew a foul inside of the box, as she stepped up and fired the penalty kick to the bottom left corner for the goal.

DeSmit was not done, as she added a second goal two and a half minutes later, as Nele Raap won a header in the Loyola defensive third, before Elizabeth Gallagher secured the ball and fed DeSmit with a long ball, as she ran onto the pass and chipped the ball over the Black Knights (9-4 overall, 3-2 Patriot League) goalkeeper, as Loyola took a commanding 3-0 lead.

Loyola continued to control the flow of the game over the last 30 minutes of game time, as the Greyhounds held on for the 3-0 win.

Loyola controlled the majority of the chances in the first half, as they out shot Army 6-2 in the first half. Despite the shot advantage, the Greyhounds failed to get on the board in the first half, despite some close chances as teams went into halftime tied 0-0.

On the night, Loyola out shot Army 15-4. The four shots were the second lowest total for the Black Knights on the year, and their one shot on goal equaled their lowest total on the year.

DeSmit scored her 10th and 11th goal of the season, while Gallagher picked up her fourth assist. Quaranta added her third assist, while Raap tallied her first career assist.

Mulholland had a quiet night, grabbing just one save on the night as she commanded the back end of the Greyhounds.

Loyola will continue Patriot League play on Wednesday, as they travel to face Bucknell, who sits atop the Patriot League standings.
