Baltimore -- Lehigh University scored a second half goal in the 70th minute to take a 2-1 lead on Saturday afternoon, as the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team could not find a equalizing goal, as they fell 2-1.
The Mountain Hawks (3-8-5 overall, 2-5-1 Patriot League) scored the opening goal of the game in the 12th minute, as a cross into the box took a unlucky deflection off of a Greyhounds (6-5-5 overall, 2-3-3 Patriot League) defender for a own goal, as Lehigh led 1-0 early.Â
Loyola found the equalizer just two minutes later, as
Riley Kennel scored her first career goal, as she tapped in the loose ball off of a corner kick, as the score was tied 1-1.Â
Both teams battled for possession in the midfield for the remainder of the half, as the score was tied 1-1 going into half time.Â
Loyola controlled the momentum and possession early in the second half, as they out shot Lehigh 12-1 in the half. Despite this, Lehigh would score the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 70th minute, as the pushed the ball up on a counter attack, as their shot took a deflection before finding the back of the net, as they led 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining.Â
The Greyhounds have their share of chances at a equalizing goal late in the game, but could not find the back of the net, as they fell to Lehigh 2-1.Â
Kennel's goal was the first goal of her career, as
Asma Merzougui and
Olivia Quaranta picked up assists on the goal.Â
The Greyhounds out shot Lehigh 18-4 and won the corner battle 16-2 on the day. The 16 corners were the most in a game since at least the 2010 season.Â
Loyola will close out Patriot League play on Wednesday when they host American at 7:00 PM.Â
