Record-Setting Meets Help Kelly, Mead Win Conference Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland's Caleb Kelly and Lily Mead were named the Patriot League Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week on Tuesday after combing for four individual victories, two Mangione Aquatic Center individual pool records and five Thomas Murphy Invitational individual standards last weekend.

The pair helped the Greyhounds men's and women's teams to victories at the Thomas Murphy Invitational over Towson, UMBC and Mount St. Mary's.

Kelly was named the Male Co-Swimmer of the Meet after winning two events and posting a second-place finish.

He won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.87 seconds, and his time was not only a meet record but the fastest in the Patriot League and No. 24 in NCAA Division I this season through competitions of Sunday night.

Kelly also was victorious in the 100 freestyle in 44.58, and his preliminaries time of 44.13 on Sunday set a pool and meet record while checking in No. 2 in the conference and No. 58 nationally. He was also second in the 100 butterfly in 49.35.

The graduate student from Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, spurred the Greyhounds to a pair of freestyle relay wins at 200 and 400 yards, as well as one in the 200 medley. All three of the relay teams he competed on set pool and meet records, as well.

Mead was a winner in two individual events and two relays over the weekend, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.

She touched the wall in 2:14.60 in the 200 breaststroke with the fastest time in the Patriot League this season and the No. 50 time in NCAA Division I as of Sunday night. Her winning time of 1:02.38 in the 100 breaststroke is second-best in the conference this year and No. 79 in the country.

Mead, a graduate student from Timonium, Maryland, set meet records in those events, and she also took down a pool standard in the 50 backstroke with a leadoff leg of 24.88 in the 200 medley relay. Her time in the 100 bacsktroke to lead off the 400 medley relay also set a meet record, and the two relays she swam on set meet marks.

The Patriot League award is the second in as many weeks for Mead and the ninth of her career. Kelly's honor is the third of his career.

Loyola will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. from Hamilton, New York, where the Greyhounds will swim a conference meet against Colgate and Lehigh.
