Queens --
Jake Sweeney scored a goal in the ninth minute on Tuesday night for the men's soccer team, as they held on to a 1-0 win over St. John's University in a non-conference matchup.
Jordy Luchies received the ball in the midfield, before his long pass over the top found
Pat Kakayira, who's pass from the back line found
Jake Sweeney, as his right footed shot found the back of the net, as the Greyhounds (2-6-3 overall, 1-2-1 Patriot League) took the early lead.
Following the goal, the Red Storm (4-5-3 overall, 2-1 Big East) began to press on the offensive end as they looked for the equalizing goal. St. John's led in shots 8-3 in the half, but Loyola's defense held strong, not allowing a clean shot for the Red Storm, as
Dylan Van der Walt also came up big, posting four saves in the first half.
In the second half, St. John's once again held the advantage in shots, 14-7. Despite the difference in shots, Loyola's defense continued their strong night, making it difficult on St. John's offense on finding a clean shot.
Both teams had chances at goal in the half, but neither could find the back of the net, as both defenses and goalies stepped up, as the second half ended scoreless, as Loyola held on for the 1-0 win.
Sweeney scored his first goal of the season, while
Pat Kakayira and
Jordy Luchies picked up assists.
Van der Walt recorded his career-best 9 saves in the win.
The Greyhounds continue Patriot League play on Saturday, as the Greyhounds will host Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
