Baltimore -- The visiting St. John's University Red Storm ended the game on a 11-1 run over the last three minutes of the game, and they outlasted the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team in a non-conference matchup.
After the Red Storm (3-0 overall) opened the fourth quarter with a made jumper, Loyola's offense came alive over the next four minutes of game time as they went on a 14-6 run.
Laura Salmeron started the run with a step back jumper to cut the deficit down to 51-49.
Amandine Amorich had a big fourth quarter, as she jumped a St. John's pass and finished it for a layup.
After a Red Storm made basket,
Lex Therien and
Kimmie Hicks followed it up with a made layup and the foul on back to back possessions, as the Greyhounds (1-2 overall) trailed 57-55 with 6:19 remaining.
Amorich made one of two from the foul line, as Hicks came up with a steal on the ensuing possession. She found Amorich for the layup, as Loyola took a one-point lead with 5:32 remaining. Amorich added another layup on the ensuing possession, as Loyola jumped out to a 60-57 lead.
St. John's would answer with a 12-1 run down the stretch, and they closed out Loyola from the foul line, going 10-11 from the free throw line to close out the game, as they won 69-61.
Lex Therien finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Kimmie Hicks scored 14 points on 4-4 shooting and was 4-5 from the foul line.
Laura Salmeron added 11 points and 4 assists, while
Amandine Amorich tied a career-best with 10 points off of the bench, to go along with 5 rebounds.
Loyola's offense came alive in the third quarter. They came out of halftime strong and managed to cut into St. John's lead.
Therien had a strong third quarter, leading Loyola with nine points. Loyola continued their strong quarter down the stretch, as
Kelly Ratigan knocked down a three-pointer late in the quarter to cut the deficit to two. Therien followed it up with a hook shot, before St. John's made another basket, and they led heading into the fourth quarter 48-46.
After a back and forth first quarter, St. John's offense shot the ball well in the second quarter, shooting 6-9 in the quarter. After Loyola tied the game early in the second quarter, the Red Storm went on a 18-7 run as they took a 36-25 halftime lead.
Lashae Dwyer led St. John's with 22 points on the night, while Jailah Donald added 13 points.
Loyola will continue non-conference action on Sunday afternoon, as they travel to face St. Francis at 2:00 PM.
