Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Defensive Stand Leads Women's Basketball to Road Win Over Colgate

Hamilton – Ava Therien (14 points), Kelly Ratigan (13 points), and Lex Therien (11 points) all scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, as the Greyhounds defense came up big down the stretch for a 64-61 win over host Colgate University in a Patriot League matchup.

The Raiders' (11-11 overall, 4-7 Patriot League) Alexa Brodie knocked down a jump shot with 6:49 remaining in the fourth to take a 54-53 lead.

Loyola quickly responded however, as they went on a 7-2 run over the next three minutes of game time, to retake a five-point lead.

After two made free throws on back-to-back possessions, Colgate cut the deficit down to one point, as the Greyhounds (11-11 overall, 6-5 Patriot League) led 60-59 with 2:27 remaining.

On the ensuing Raiders possession, the Greyhounds forced a miss, while Lex Therien grabbed the rebound before being fouled. After Therien knocked down one of two free throws, the Raiders had two looks at the basket to tie the game, but good defense from Meliah Van-Otoo and Kelly Ratigan led to two misses, with Lex Therien rebounding the latter miss.

Coming out of a timeout, Ratigan was fouled and sent to the foul line, where she made one of two, to take a 62-59 lead with 8 seconds remaining.

Loyola played the foul game, fouling the Raiders' Tiasia McMillan, who hit both free throws, to trail by one. Ava Therien was fouled, and hit both free throws on the ensuing possession, to retake the three-point lead.

On Colgate's final attempt, Madison Schiller missed the three-pointer, as Loyola held on for the road win.

In the third quarter, both offenses were clicking, as both teams shot over 50 percent in the quarter. Kelly Ratigan knocked down a jump shot with 7:18 in the quarter to take a seven-point lead.

Colgate battled back in the third, as a pair of free throws with 3:04 remaining tied it at 40-40. Teams traded baskets to end the third, as the score was tied 46-46 heading into the fourth.

All eight players who saw action scored for Loyola, led by Ava Therien with 14 points. Kelly Ratigan scored 13 points, while Lex Therien had 11 points to go with 9 rebounds. Van-Otoo added 8 points, while Kimmie Hicks and Lily Bottomey had 7 and 5 points respectively off the bench.

Morgan McMahon had a game-high 20 points for the Raiders, while Tiasia McMillan (14 points) and Taylor Golembiewski (12 points) were also in double figures.

Loyola will begin a two-game home stand on Wednesday, when they host Lafayette at 7:00 PM.
