Annapolis – The Naval Academy used a 5-0 run over the last 1:23 of the fourth quarter on Wednesday evening to win over visiting Loyola University Maryland, 53-51.
Kelly Ratigan converted on a fast break layup to give the Greyhounds (13-12 overall, 8-6 Patriot League) a 47-45 lead with 5:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Midshipmen (10-15 overall, 6-8 Patriot League) responded on the ensuing possession thanks to a Kyah Smith layup.
After a pair of free throws by
Kimmie Hicks, Loyola held the Navy to just one point over the next two minutes, as they led 51-48.
A offensive rebound and layup from Toni Papahronis tied the game up for Navy with 41 seconds remaining in the fourth.
On the next Loyola possession,
Kelly Ratigan missed a pull-up jumper, as Navy called timeout with 19 seconds left. Kate Samson scored on a layup, to give Navy the 53-51 lead with 2 seconds remaining. Loyola had one last look to tie the game, but Samson blocked a Therien shot to secure the win over visiting Loyola.
Kimmie Hicks had a team-high 14 points off the bench to lead the Greyhounds.
Ava Therien added 11 points, while Laura Salmeron and
Lex Therien had 8 points each.
Lex Therien added a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kyah Smith had a game-high 17 points to lead the Midshipmen, while Kate Samson had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Greyhounds will host Boston on Saturday evening for a crucial matchup for Patriot League standings.
