Lex Therien made a pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, as the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team held visiting Boston University to 0-7 shooting during the overtime period, as the Greyhounds won 70-65.
Kimmie Hicks scored a game and career-high 27 points on the night, on 8-15 shooting, including 9-9 from the foul line.
With the win, Loyola now sits in sole possession of the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League.
Kelly Ratigan made a three-pointer a minute into overtime to give the Greyhounds (14-12 overall, 9-6 Patriot League) a 63-61 lead.
Lex Therien made both free throws with 2:49 remaining in overtime, as Loyola led by four points.
Laura Salmeron put the finishing touches on the comeback win, as she made two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to secure the 70-65 win. The Greyhounds held the Terriers (16-10 overall, 8-7 Patriot League) to without a field goal in overtime (0-7).
Ratigan hit her first three of the game with 4:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Loyola tied the game up for the first time since the opening tip, 54-54.
After Boston knocked down two free throws,
Kimmie Hicks scored on back-to-back possessions, as she gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game, 58-56, with 2:07 remaining.
The Terriers responded with a Monteagudo three-pointer, as they took a one-point lead. After a Loyola missed shot, Monteagudo was sent to the line, where she missed her first free throw, before making her second, as Loyola trailed by two with 21 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Loyola got the ball into
Lex Therien's hands, as she drew a foul with 9 seconds remaining. Therien stepped up to the line and knocked down both free throws, to tie the game with 9 seconds remaining. Boston had one last look at the buzzer, but the shot fell short, as they went into overtime.
Lex Therien started the Loyola rally in the third quarter with her fourth three-pointer of the year, as she drew them to within six points. Loyola's defense stepped up, forcing 4 turnovers in the third quarter.
Caitlin Weimar scored 10 of Boston's 12 points in the third quarter, as the Greyhounds limited her supporting cast to no made field goals in the quarter.
Hicks led Loyola with 27 points, to go along with three steals and two rebounds. Laura Salmeron added 16 points and 5 assists on the night, while
Lex Therien tallied her 11
th double-double of the season, as she had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Boston was led by Caitlin Weimar who had 22 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Aoibhe Gormley had 15 points off the bench for the Terriers.
Loyola will be back on the road on Wednesday, as they travel to face off against Bucknell at 7:00 PM.
