ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It took less than 90 seconds for the Loyola University Maryland men's swimming and diving team to turn in a record-setting time at the start of the 2024 Patriot League Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Greyhounds' 200 medley relay team swam 1:24.79 to win the first men's race of the meet in a time that set school, Lejuene Hall pool and a Patriot League and Patriot League Championship record.
Joe Hayburn led off for the Greyhounds with a school-record split of 21.60 seconds in the 50-yard backstroke, and then
Max Verheyen pulled Loyola into the lead by swimming 23.64 seconds in the breaststroke leg.
Patrick Hayburn went 20.51 in the butterfly, a leg after which Navy held a led by one-tenth of a second.
Caleb Kelly erased that in the 50 freestyle, completing his portion of the race in just 19.04 seconds to finish the record-setting race.
Navy had set the pool record in December with a time of 1:24.90 that was also the Patriot League overall record. The Midshipmen had posted a mark of 1:25.30 to win the race at last season's Championships in a record time that stood for a year.
The Greyhounds' women reached the podium in the 200 medley relay, as well, taking third in 1:40.32, a school record.
Lily Mead got things started with a backstroke leg of 25.05, and then
Avery Stimmel turned 29.01 seconds in the breaststroke.
Haley Robinson swam 24.06 in the butterfly, and
Charley Tulio completed the relay in 22.20 in the freestyle.
The Greyhounds finished 11-hundredths of a second behind Army West Point and just over a second behind Navy.
Loyola's men picked up a fourth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.
Tyler Knurek (1:39.54),
Max Verheyen (1:36.54),
Liam Schindler (1:38.83) and
Henry Mueller (1:36.23) combined to go 6:35.94, a new school-best time. .
The women came back to finish fifth in the 800 freestyle relay where Mead (1:48.92), Michaela Schultz (1:50.07),
Riley Zinger (1:53.72) and
Riley Fried (1:52.01) swam 7:24.72. Mead's time set a school 200 freestyle record.
In 3-meter diving preliminaries, Calista Fasser was the best finisher for the Greyhounds, taking 25
th with 213.10 points.
Lily Bistline was 35
th (182.10) and
Kassidy Georgevich took 36
th (175.95).
Through two finals, the Loyola men are in second place with 116 points, four behind Navy and six ahead of Army West Point. The Greyhounds women are seventh with 104 points after three finals.
Competition will resume Thursday with preliminary action at 10 a.m.
