Nine Hounds Earn All-Patriot League Swimming & Diving Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nine Loyola University Maryland swimmers earned All-Patriot League recognition on Wednesday with Lily Mead, Henry Mueller and Max Verheyen picking up first-team honors.

Michela Schultz and Avery Stimmel were recognized with second-team laurels on the women's side, while Joe Hayburn, Patrick Hayburn, Harry Hearn and Caleb Kelly garnered second-team honors for the men.

Verheyen becomes the first Loyola swimmer, male or female, to earn All-Patriot League First Team honors four times in a career since the Greyhounds joined the conference in 2013-14. He was the Patriot League Championships Newcomer of the Meet in 2020, the first year he was a first-team honoree, and he then received the recognition in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Mead and Mueller will both have the opportunity to join that club next season as they head into their final years with Loyola as three-time All-Patriot League First Team swimmers.

At the Championships last week, Verheyen had two third-place finishes for the Greyhounds, taking bronze in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. He also picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

Mead became a three-time All-Patriot League First Team member for the third seasons in a row after winning the 200 backstroke for the second time in as many years. She also swam a season-best time in the 200 individual medley and finished second, and she was seventh in the 400 individual medley to finish as the No. 6 point-scorer on the women's side.

Mueller also earned first-team recognition for the third-straight season as the junior was 16th in individual points in the Championships. He had personal-best times in the 100 and 200 backstrokes to earn fourth- and second-place finishes, and he also swam a PR in the 200 individual medley which was good for ninth.

Stimmel earned her first All-Patriot League recognition after amassing 61 points for the women's team at the Championships. She took eighth in both the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and she was 10th in the 50 freestyle.

Schultz scored 57 points for the Greyhounds, scoring in three events, as well. She reached two 'A' finals and finished sixth in both the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyles, swimming personal-best times at the meet in both events. Schultz also had a 17th-place finish in the 200 freestyle to score in that event.

Joe Hayburn ended a successful first season with the Greyhounds with second-team honors from the conference. He scored in three individual events with a second-place in the 100 backstroke, third-place in the 200 backstroke and 11th in the 50 freestyle.

His older brother, Patrick, edged him by one point, scoring 72 individually to Joe's 71. Patrick Hayburn took third in the 100 backstroke, fifth in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the 50 freestyle for the Greyhounds, all in personal-best times.

Hearn picked up his first All-Patriot League recognition after scoring 64 points for the Greyhounds. He took a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 butterflies, and he took 11th in the 200 freestyle.

Kelly was one of the fastest freestyle swimmers at the Championships and demonstrated it with a second-place finish in the 50 and third-place touch in the 100. He also had a 20th-place finish in the 100 butterfly as he earned his third All-Patriot League honors in as many seasons and has a chance to be a four-time honoree when he returns next year.

All-Patriot League teams are determined by a combination of place and point finishes at the conference championships. The swimmers and divers who place first in individual events automatically qualify for the All-League first team, while runner-up finishers are guaranteed at least a second-team spot. Both teams are completed based on overall points compiled during the championship. For example, a second-place finisher can move up to the first team if they accumulated enough points during the meet and the first-place finishers do not fill the 18 spots on the first team. Only individual points count toward all-League accolades.
