BALTIMORE – Boston University took a 4-0 lead less than 40 seconds into the second quarter on Saturday, and a late Loyola University Maryland run came up short as the Terriers took a 12-10 Patriot League decision at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Matthew Minicus had a season-high five points on three goals and two assists, and
Joey Kamish tied his career-best with three assists while adding a goal for Loyola.
The Terriers were up 2-0 after less than two minutes with goals Tommy Bourque and Louis Perfetto. Zach Travaglini added a goal with 1:05 to go in the first quarter, and then D'Alto scored 39 seconds into the second to make the score 4-0.
Kamish put Loyola on the board when he scored on the right side with a
Davis Lindsey assist at 13:31 in the second, and 2:21 later,
Adam Poitras added an unassisted tally for the Greyhounds.
Boston University came back with two of their own as Perfetto assisted on goals by D'Alto and Brenden Kelly at 7:40 and 5:57 to push the lead back to four, 6-2.
Coming out of a timeout,
Evan James used a pick to draw a short-stick in the middle, and he scored on a high bouncer with 87 ticks left in the first half, pulling Loyola within three. The Greyhounds won the ensuing faceoff and got two shots off, but Boston University regained possession and Kelly scored with three seconds to go in the period, sending the teams to the locker room with Boston University up, 7-3.
James and Poitras scored of Kamish and Minicus assists in the third quarter's first six minutes to make it a two-goal game, but Perfetto and D'Alto had goals a minute apart at 6:54 and 5:54 to spread the margin to four, 9-5.
Loyola started the fourth quarter on extra-man, and Kamish fed
Luke Murphy from behind for a 12-yard shot that found the next just 24 seconds in. The Greyhounds were back within three after that, but Boston University scored on goals by Thomas Niedringhaus and Kelly over the next four minutes to push its advantage to five, 11-6.
Minicus broke through for Loyola with a low-angle goal on the left after Poitras fed from 'X' at 9:29, but Travaglini grabbed a rebounded shot and scored at 7:44 to make it 12-7.
That was the last goal Boston University would score, however, as Loyola rallied late with three goals.
Brady West caught a Minicus pass inside on extra man to turn and score his first career goal at 5:47,a md Minicus had two more goals for the Greyhounds before time ran out.
Luke Staudt made 19 saves for Loyola, matching Boston University's Will Barnes.
The Greyhounds had their best day at the faceoff dot this season, going 15 of 25 after starting 1 of 4 in the first quarter.
Eric Pacheco won 11 of 14 faceoffs and picked up a game-high six ground balls.
Boston University led 11-1 in ground balls after the first quarter, but Loyola had a 34-19 advantage in the next three to hold a 35-30 edge off the ground overall.
Loyola will be back in action on Saturday, March 23, when it heads to Easton, Pennsylvania, to face Lafayette College.
