HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate University scored the game's last five goals on Saturday, turning an 11-9 deficit into a 14-11 victory over Loyola University Maryland in the teams' Patriot League opener at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Henry Haberman capped a 3-1 Loyola run with an extra-man goal 1:42 into the fourth quarter, and the Greyhounds were in front by a pair.
Colgate went on extra-man itself less just over two minutes later, and Liam Connor scored with 10:38 to play in regulation. The Raiders then tied the game at 5:37 with a Ryan Favaro goal, and Colgate added three more over the course of the remainder of the game.
Davis Lindsey tied or exceeded his career-high in points for the second game in a row, posting a new best with six. He scored a second-quarter goal and also had a career-high five assists in the game.
Adam Poitras added three goals and an assist, and Evan Jams also had a hat trick. Matt Minicus scored twice for the Greyhounds, while
Seth Higgins and Haberman both added tallies.
Poitras put Loyola in front with the game's first goal at 7:56 in the first, but the Raiders took a 2-1 lead with Jack Turner and Rory Connor scores later in the period.
MInicus cut across the top of the defense and tied the game at 2-2 just 64 seconds into the second quarter, and Lindsey threw a pass from 'X' to Higgins for a one-timer at 12:10. Loyola then led or was tied until Favaro's goal in the fourth quarter.
Turner scored again for Colgate at 10:25, but the Greyhounds got three-straight goals from James, Lindsey and Poitras, culminating with Poitras' score that put Loyola in front, 6-3, with 5:35 to go in the half.
Colgate scored twice over the next four minutes, but Poitras one-timed a Lindsey pass with 24 ticks left in the quarter, and Loyola took a 7-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Raiders struck first in the third with a Rory Connor goal, but Minicus pushed the lead back to two with his second of the day at 7:30.
Hunter Drouin and Turner posted Colgate goals to tie the game at 8-8 with 5:53 on the third-quarter clock, but two James goals at 1:39 and with 49 seconds left, made it 10-8 Greyhounds. Turner would get his fourth of the day with 19 seconds on the clock, and Haberman's goal reinstated Loyola's two-goal lead.
Loyola will be back at home for its next two games, starting with a 3:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 9, against Duke University. That game follows a Loyola women's lacrosse tilt against Towson University that will start at 12 noon.
