ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Joe Hayburn won the 100 backstroke title at the 2024 ECAC Swimming & Diving Championships, doing so in record-breaking fashion to lead Loyola University Maryland at the event on Saturday.
Hayburn touched the wall in 47.09 seconds in the morning's preliminaries to break his own Loyola record of 47.23 seconds. The time also broke the ECAC Championships record of 47.51 seconds, set in 2012 by Pittsburgh's Adam Maczewsk.
The Loyola freshman came back in the evening session to win the final in 47.27 seconds, holding off Princeton's Yanning Zhang who was second in 47.78. Hayburn's preliminaries time improved his NCAA 'B' Cut time in the event.
Hans Van Lierop had a second-place finish or Loyola in the 100 butterfly, setting a personal best in the preliminaries with a time of 47.71 seconds before going 47.76 in the final. Navy's Lachlan Andrew edged him by just six-hundredths of a second for first.
Lily Mead took second in the 400 individual medley, a day after winning the 200 version of the discipline, with a NCAA 'B' time. Mead finished in 4:16.44, just behind James Madison's Jess Pryne's 4:16.27.
Stella Meyerhoeffer placed sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.65 seconds.
She was a part of the 200 medley relay with
Haylee Zinger,
Brayden Bowen and
Maddie Testa that finished sixth in 1:47.28.
In the men's 200 medley relay,
Tie Manuel,
Liam Morris, Hans Van Lierop and Joey Zellner finished sixth in 1:31.09.
Riley Riebling scored for the Loyola women in the women's 400 individual medley, placing 16
th in 4:57.45. Three Greyhounds picked up scoring finishes in the men's 400 individual medley with Pierre Leroy's eighth-place finish (4:00.26) leading the way;
Josh Stegner was 11
th (4:04.07), and
Matt Voight took 13
th in 4:06.72.
John Inman was 13
th in the men's 100 butterfly, clocking 49.55 in the final.
Maddie Testa took 15
th in the women's 200 freestyle (1:57.36), and
Riley Coyle was 11
th in the men's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.46.
In addition to Hayburn's win, Manuel scored with a 12
th-place finish in the 100 backstroke, swimming 50.39, and Michael McMahan was 16
th in 50.87.
Loyola's men's 800 freestyle relay – Leroy, Manuel, Coyle and
Peter Weinstein – took fourth in 6:46.65. Testa,
Izzy Barnette, Alana Andrewss and
Emily Colyar were fifth in the women's 800 freestyle relay, swimming 7:52.28.
After two days, both the men's and womens' teams are fifth at the championships. Competition resumes on Sunday with morning preliminaries at 9 o'clcok and finals starting at 4 p.m.
