BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Loyola University Maryland golf had the second-best team round of the tournament in Tuesday's final round to move up three spots and finish seventh at West Virginia's Mountaineer Invitational.
The Greyhounds shot 9-under 279, second only to host and tournament champion West Virginia's 12-under 276. Loyola finished the tournament at 24-over 888, moving past teams from William & Mary, Tennessee Tech and Appalachian State on Tuesday at the 7,308-yard, par-72 Pete Dye Golf Club.
Individually,
James Rico tied for the second-best round of the tournament and was the biggest upward mover in the final round. He shot 5-under 67, dropping three birdies in his final nine holes to move into a tie for 25
th overall after starting the day tied for 50
th. He shot 5-over for the tournament.
Rico was one of three Loyola players who shot in the 60s on Tuesday, joining
Carlo Pizzano and
Jackson Roman who both shot 3-under 69.
Roman got as low as 4-under on Tuesday before a bogey on his 16
th hole set him back a shot. He moved up 12 spots in the individual standings to a tie for 16
th place overall, shooting 3-over 219.
Pizzano started his day with two birdies among his first six holes, but a double-bogey six on the course's 17
th hole set him back to even for the day. He made the turn to the front nine and pared the club's first four holes. He then had three birdies in four holes to get to 3-under. Pizzano also moved up 12 shots and finished tied for 21
st at 4-over 220.
Connor McGarrity and
Mike Crowley both shot 2-over 74s on Tuesday and tied for 52
nd at 13-over.
Dustin Stocksdale made his collegiate debut at the tournament and shot 5-over 77 in the final round to tie for 63
rd at 15-over.
The tournament was the final regular-season event for Loyola before the Greyhounds head to the Patriot League Championships April 26-28 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
It was the Greyhounds' eighth top-10 finish as a team in 10 tournaments this year. The only non-top-10 finishes came in tournaments, like the Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by Power Five schools.
