INDIANAPOLIS – Loyola University Maryland's
Joe Hayburn won his heat and finished tied for 20
th overall in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials on Sunday.
The rising sophomore from Bowie, Maryland, swam a school-record (long-course meters) in the event, touching the wall in 54.96 seconds to win the sixth heat. He entered the Trials with the No. 39 overall seed time of 55.26 seconds.
Hayburn's time finished tied for 20
th overall with a fellow Patriot League swimmer, Ben Irwin of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Hayburn is also qualified for the 200-meter backstroke at the Trials, an event which will start on Wednesday, June 19.
Former Loyola swimmer Ben Cono '18 competed in the 100-meter breaststroke and tied for 16
th in the heats with a time of 1:00.80. He then went 1:00.50 in a swim off for the last spot in the semifinals, finishing second.
