Late Dayton Goals Propels Flyers Over Women's Soccer

Story Links

Baltimore -- Elizabeth Gallagher scored the opening goal just two minutes into the game on Thursday night, but a 83rd minute goal by the University of Dayton was the difference, as they defeated Loyola University Maryland 2-1 in the season opener.

Gallagaher drew a foul early in the game in the Greyhounds (0-1 overall) offensive third to set up a early free kick. Baylee DeSmit stepped up and delivered a ball into the middle of the box, where Gallagher was able to connect her head onto the ball and send it to the bottom right corner for Loyola's first goal of the season.

The Flyers (1-0 overall) responded in the 11th minute, as Liv Grenda took a shot from the top of the box that found the back of the net, as the score was tied 1-1.

Dayton possessed the majority of the possession of the first half and had some shots on goal, but Brigid Mulholland came up big for the Greyhounds, recording five saves in the first half to keep the Flyers off the scoreboard, as teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Loyola controlled the tempo in the beginning of the half, as they led in shots 6-0 through the first 25 minutes of the second half. Despite the advantage, the Greyhounds could not find the back of the net.

Dayton managed to get a pair of shots, as one was saved and one was wide as the second half winded down. In the 83rd minute, on a Dayton attack, they managed to draw a foul in the box for a penalty kick, as Kyra Karfonta scored the go-ahead goal with just over seven minutes remaining.

Despite a pair of looks at a equalizer, Loyola could not find the back of the net, as they lost 2-1.

Mulholland had six saves in goal in her first career start. Gallagher had the lone Loyola goal, as DeSmit picked up her 17th career assist.

Loyola will be on the road on Sunday, as they will travel to face Longwood at 7:00 PM.
