FARMVILLE, Va. – Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year
Baylee DeSmit broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 86
th minute on Sunday night, and
Brigid Mulholland made eight saves in goal, as Loyola University Maryland women's soccer scored a 1-0 win on the road at Longwood University in a non-conference match.
DeSmit shot from the top-right corner of the box and beat Longwood goalkeeper Sara Curtis for the game's lone goal.
Mulholland turned away eight shots, setting a career-high in saves, to preserve the tie.
The Lancers (0-1-0 overall) had a 17-11 overall lead in shots in the match.
Loyola (1-1-0) took eight first-half shots to Longwood's six, but the Lancers squeezed off five in the first 11 minutes after the break. Mulholland made a pair of saves during that stretch to keep the sheet clean.
She made two more saves in the 80
th and 82
nd minute, and Curtis saved a
Malone Christen shot in the 83
rd to preserve the scoreless tie before DeSmit's strike.
Mulholland would be tested one last time on a Taylor Hoag shot on goal with less than five minutes to play, but she made her final save of the night, and Loyola ran out the clock for the win.
The Greyhounds return to their home pitch on Thursday, August 22, to host George Washington in a 7 p.m. match at Ridley Athletic Complex.
