Baltimore --
Asma Merzougui scored the opening goal in the first half for the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team, but visiting Wagner College tied the game shortly after, as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in non-conference action on Thursday night.
Both teams had equal chances early in the first half on Thursday night, as both offenses found good looks at goal early on.
Baylee DeSmit had a good look at goal in the 19th minute, but the ball deflected off the crossbar as the score remained 0-0.
Shortly after, the Greyhounds (3-2-2 overall) found the back of the net, as a cross from
Malia Tarazon found its way into the middle of the box, as
Asma Merzougui striked the ball into the back of the net for the goal.
The lead lasted just 15 seconds, as the Seahawks (1-3-4 overall) responded quickly off the kick-off, as Wagners Anna Shepard shot the ball from outside the box for the goal.
Following the pair of goals, Loyola controlled the majority of the possession and momentum, as they possessed the ball for nearly 70 percent of the first half. The Greyhounds had a pair of looks on goal right before half from
Michaela Virgin and DeSmit, but remained tied at the half.
Loyola continued to control the possession in the second half, as they out shot Wagner 9-0 in the second half. The Greyhounds also won the corner battle in the second half, 6-0. Despite the sharp advantage in the second half, the Greyhounds offense could not find the back to the net, as they battled to a tie against Wagner.
Merzougui scored her first goal of the season, while Tarazon added her team-high third assist of the season.
The Greyhounds will conclude non-conference play on Sunday when they host Monmouth at 3:00 PM.
