Baylee DeSmit converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute, as the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team held on to beat Monmouth 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to hand the Hawks their first loss of the season.
DeSmit drew a foul in the box in the 64th minute in the second half, as she stepped up and drilled the penalty kick to the left side of the goal, as the Greyhounds (4-2-2 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the second half.
The Hawks (4-1-3 overall) had a chance at goal three minutes later, but a diving save from
Brigid Mulholland kept Monmouth off the scoreboard.
Loyola continued to press on the offensive end, as
Asma Merzougui had a shot on goal, but was saved by a diving save from Monmouth. The Greyhounds defense held strong down the stretch, as they slowed Monmouth's offense over the last few minutes.
The Hawks had one last chance at goal with under a minute, but
Brigid Mulholland came up with a big save, as the Greyhounds handed Monmouth their first loss of the season.
DeSmit scored her Patriot League leading sixth goal of the season, while Mulholland tallied seven saves in the win for her third shutout of the season.
Loyola will begin Patriot League play on Saturday as they will host Boston at 12:00 PM.
