PARIS – Loyola University Maryland graduate McKenzie Coan earned her seventh career Paralympics medal on Monday, claiming silver at the 2024 Games in the women's 400-meter freestyle (S7).
Coan, who graduated from Loyola in 2018, helped the United States go one-two in the event, swimming 5:10.34 to finish second behind teammate Morgan Stickney.
Coan was less than two-tenths of a second ahead of Italy's Giulia Terzi after 250 meters, and her lead was just 0.33 after 300. She stretched her advantage to 1.96 seconds, however over the next 50 meters and then came to the wall 2.27 seconds ahead of Terzi.
The medal is Coan's third in the event at the Paralympics after winning gold at the distance during the 2016 and 2020 Games in Rio de Janiero and Tokyo.
She will continue her 2024 program on Wednesday with the women's 100-meter freestyle. That event will be her second of four as she is slated to compete in the women's 50-meter freestyle (S8) on Thursday and the women's 50-meter butterfly (S7) Saturday.
