Baylee DeSmit scored a goal and recorded a assist in the second half for the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team on Wednesday night, but a 82nd minute goal from the Naval Academy downed the Greyhounds 4-3.
The scoring got started early in the game, as the Midshipmen (8-5 overall, 2-0 Patriot League) scored the opening goal in the 6th minute off of a corner kick.
The Greyhounds (4-3-3 overall, 0-1-1 Patriot League) responded just four minutes later, as link up play between
Elizabeth Gallagher and
Olivia Quaranta led to a goal from
Baylee DeSmit.
Navy held the advantage over the next 25 minutes of game time, as Alexa Riddle scored two more goals, for a first half hat-trick, as the Midshipmen took a 3-1 lead. Loyola looked to cut their deficit before halftime, as they out shot Navy 10-6 in the first half, but they could not find the net as they trailed at halftime.
Loyola did not wait long out of halftime to score another goal, as DeSmit drew another penalty in the box, before drilling the penalty kick to cut the deficit down to one goal.
In the 69th minute, DeSmit sent in a cross off of a free kick, as it found a diving
Zoe Willis, as they drew the score to 3-3.
Over the next 10 minutes of play, both teams had chances for a go-ahead goal, but neither team could score the go ahead.
Navy had a pair of looks at goal in the 79th minute, but
Brigid Mulholland came up big with two amazing saves to keep the score tied.
Navy found the go ahead goal in the 82nd minute, as Chiara Cosenza scored off of a rebound after a Mulholland save.
Loyola had a few chances at a equalizer, thanks to free kick opportunities in their offensive half, but could not find another equalizing goal, as Navy held on for the 4-3 win.
DeSmit scored her 8th and 9th goals of the season, to go along with her third assist of the season. Willis scored her first goal of the season, while Gallagher tallied her third assist of the season, and Quaranta's first.
Mulholland recorded five saves, all coming in the second half, on the night.
Loyola will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Lafayette.
