Worcester --
Seth Powder scored his first career goal for the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in the 90th minute, and the Greyhounds picked up their first win of the season over the College of the Holy Cross, 2-1.
Richie Nichols scored the opening goal of the game for the Greyhounds (1-5-3 overall, 1-1-1 Patriot League) in the 72nd minute. Nichols received a pass from
Caden Stafford, and he curled in the shot from outside of the box into the upper left corner, as Loyola took the lead.
The Crusaders (2-5-3 overall, 1-1-1 Patriot League) answered with a goal of their own just four minutes later, scoring on a free kick from just outside of the box to tie the game at 1-1.
Loyola had a few chances over the last four minutes of the game for a go-ahead goal, with their best look coming from
Seth Powder, but his shot from inside the box was wide.
Powder would redeem himself with under a minute remaining. A shot from Stafford forced a diving save, but Powder was there to tap in the goal, and Loyola retook the late lead, 2-1, as they would hold on for the win over Holy Cross.
In the first half, both teams maintained equal possession throughout the first half, as both teams tallied five shots in the half. Neither team could find the back of the net, however, as the score was tied 0-0 at halftime.
Powder recorded his first career goal, while Nichols scored his first goal of the season. Stafford recorded his first two assists of the season in the win.
Dylan Van der Walt posted three saves in the game for Loyola.
The Greyhounds return to action next Saturday as they remain on the road for a matchup against Navy.
