Baltimore -- Five players scored in double figures on Monday evening for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, as they downed the visiting American University Eagles, 77-38, to pick up their first Patriot League win of the season.
Laura Salmeron led all scorers with 19 points on a career-best five made three-pointers.
Koi Sims recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Greyhounds (7-9 overall, 1-4 Patriot League) got out to a fast start in the first quarter as they were able to use a 13-2 run over the final 7:39 of the first quarter to jump out to a 16-6 lead.
Koi Sims had another strong start to the game, scoring 6 of the teams 16 points in the first quarter.
Loyola's momentum continued into the second quarter, as they opened the quarter on a 11-0 run, which included a pair of Laura Salmeron three's. Loyola held American to just one shot during their run to open the second quarter.
Loyola's offense continued to gel in the quarter, as they closed out the quarter on a 9-3 run, as they led 41-16 at the half. he Greyhounds' 41 points in the first half was their most in a first half this season.
The Greyhounds continued to click early in the second half, as they took a 30-point lead halfway through the quarter, after a Salmeron layup, as they led 53-23 with 4:26 remaining in the quarter.
The Eagles (0-16 overall, 0-15 Patriot League) could not chip away at the Greyhounds lead in the second half, as they lost 77-38.
Meliah Van-Otoo recorded a season-best 14 points off of the bench, to go along with a career-high 6 rebounds.
Marta Espinal posted a career-high 11 points, while
Amandine Amorich also added 11 points.
Kailey Kalet had a career-high 7 assists and 5 rebounds in the win. The last time the Greyhounds had five players in double-figures against a Division I opponent was against Bucknell on January 25, 2020.
Loyola's 9 turnovers are the fewest in a game this season, while the Greyhounds shot 47.6% from three-point range, which is their highest percentage in a game this season. Loyola held American to just 26.4% from the field and 7.1% from three-point range.
The Greyhounds continue Patriot League play on Saturday, as they welcome Lehigh to Reitz for a 5:00 PM tip-off, as this will be the teams' second meeting of the season. Lehigh won the first matchup 74-66.
