Baltimore -- The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team went on a 11-4 run over the final 4:28 of the fourth quarter, but could not complete the fourth quarter comeback as they fell to visiting College of the Holy Cross, 49-46, in their Patriot League opener.
Following a Holy Cross basket, the Greyhounds (6-6 overall, 0-1 Patriot League) responded with a pick-and-pop, as
Ally Lovisolo knocked down the three-pointer to cut the deficit down to within 10 points with 4:13 remaining.
Loyola continued to chip into the Crusaders (8-4 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) lead, as a pair of
Amandine Amorich free throws made it a 45-40 Holy Cross lead with 2:43 remaining.
With 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter,
Kailey Kalet hit a three-pointer in the corner to cut their deficit down to four points. On the ensuing Holy Cross possession, Kalet forced a steal before finding Laura Salmeron for the layup as the Greyhounds trailed by just two points with 21 seconds remaining.
The Crusaders/ Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly made one of two from the line to make it a three-point game, as Loyola called a timeout with 14 seconds remaining. Coming out of the timeout, Amorich had a good look from the corner for the game-tying three-pointer, but the shot hit off the rim.
Loyola sent Holy Cross to the line, but the Crusaders missed both free throws, but a last second heave from half court was off the mark as Holy Cross held on to win.
Kailey Kalet scored a career-high 11 points on the night, while
Amandine Amorich added 11 points of her own. Laura Salmeron and
Koi Sims had 8 points each, while Sims tied a career-best with 16 rebounds in the game.
Simone Foreman led the Crusaders with 14 points and 14 rebounds on the evening.
The Greyhounds will continue Patriot League play on Sunday as they will travel to face Lehigh at 2:00 PM.
