Women's Hoops Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short to Lafayette

Baltimore -- Laura Salmeron recorded her fourth 20-point game of the season on Wednesday evening, but Lafayette College outscored the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team 22-13 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 60-59 Patriot League win. 

Lafayette's Abby Antognoli knocks down a pull-up jumper with 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Leopards (5-13 overall, 2-5 Patriot League) took a 57-55 lead. 

After a Loyola miss on the ensuing possession, Lafayette knocked down both free throws for a four-poitn lead with 31 seconds remaining. 

Meliah Van-Otoo hit a turnaround three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to cut the Greyhounds (7-11 overall, 1-6 Patriot League) deficit to one point. 

Following a Loyola foul, Lafayette made one of two free throws, as the Greyhounds trailed by two points with 11 seconds left. 

Van-Otoo drove the basket and drew a foul in the paint to send her to the line. She made the first free throw, as the second hit off of the front rim. Lily Bottomley grabbed the offensive rebound and shot a last second three-pointer, but fell short, as the Leopards held on for the 60-59 win. 

Laura Salmeron finished with a team-high 21 points to go along with five reobounds, four steals, and two assists. 

Meliah Van-Otoo had 10 points on a career-high three made three-pointers off of the bench. Lily Bottomley added 9 points and vie rebounds off of the bench for the Greyhounds. 

Koi Sims recorded 10 rebounds for her 11th double-digit rebound game this season. Amandine Amorich recorded a career-best six assists to go along with four rebounds and two assists. 

Teams came out of halftime all tied up at 29-29. Salmeron opened the second half with a three-pointer for the Greyhounds. After a pair of Lafayette baskets, Salmeron scored on a driving layup after a steal to tie the game back up at 34-34. 

Over the last 3:13 of the third quarter, the Greyhounds held the Leopards scoreless, as Loyola used a 12-0 run, fueled by six points each from Sims and Salmeron, as they took a 46-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

Abby Antognoli led the Leopards with 21 points and 7 assists, while Teresa Kiewiet had 15 points and 11 rebounds on the night. 

The Greyhounds remain on the road this weekend, as they will travel up to Worcester, Massachusets, as they will face Holy Cross on Saturday.
