Women's Basketball's Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short to Bucknell on Wednesday Night

Baltimore -- The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team used a 14-1 run in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 48-44 with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Bucknell University held on for the 54-49 win on Wednesday evening. 

Sophia Sabino scored on a pull-up jump shot for the Bison (11-9 overall, 6-3 Patriot League) as they took a 48-33 lead with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. 

On the ensuing possession, Koi Sims hit a three-pointer for the Greyhounds to kick-start their 14-1 run. 

Sims scored on a layup on the next Greyhounds (7-13 overall, 1-8 Patriot League) possession, as Laura Salmeron followed it up with a steal and layup right after, as Loyola cut their deficit down to 48-40 with 4:05 remaining. 

Salmeron added a layup and a pair of free throws to trail by four points with 1:51 remaining. 
 
Following a Loyola foul, the Bisons' Isabella King hit one of two free throws to lead 49-44 with 51 seconds remaining. 

Coming out of the timeout, Amandine Amorich knocked down a three-pointer, as Loyola trailed 49-47 with 45 seconds remaining. 

Bucknell made both free throws after a Loyola foul, as Salmeron responded with a layup to stay within two points with 39 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Loyola sent Bucknell to the line again, but this time, King missed both free throws for the Bison, but the Greyhounds turned the ball over in transition. 

The Bison went back to the line, where Reese Zemitis made one of two, as Bucknell led 52-49 with 24 seconds remaining. Coming out of the Loyola timeout, they turned the ball over on the offensive end of the court, as the Bison held on for the 54-49 win. 

Koi Sims led the team with 16 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks and 2 steals off the bench. Laura Salmeron added 14 points, a career-best 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. 

After a slow first half, Bucknell started the second half shooting 6-7, as they used a 16-7 run to take a 32-25 lead with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter. The continued their momentum throughout the quarter, as they led 39-30 heading into the fourth. 

Loyola's defense had a strong first half, as they held the Bison to just 16 points, which tied a season-low, as they shot just 5-26 (19.2%) from the field and 2-15 (13.3%) in the first half, as the Greyhounds led 18-16 at halftime. 

Ashley Sofilkanich finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Bison, while Reese Zemitis finished with 14 points on the night. 

The Greyhounds will head up to Boston on Saturday to face Boston University at 5:00 pm.
