Baltimore -- Amandine Armorich tied a career-best with 19 points for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team on Wednesday evening, but the Greyhounds fell to the visiting Army West Point Black Knights, 70-55, in a Patriot League matchup.
Amorich had 19 points on 7-12 shooting, while also recording a team-high four assists. Laura Salmeron and
Koi Sims each had 12 points on the night, while Sims added 6 rebounds on the evening.
Army West Point jumped out to a early lead in the opening quarter, as they used a 8-0 run to jump out to a 15-4 run with 4:00 minutes remaining in the quarter. Loyola managed to cut into the lead at the end of the quarter, as Salmeron's layup at the horn cut the Greyhounds (6-8 overall, 0-3 Patriot League) deficit to 11 points at the end of the quarter.
Loyola's offense came alive towards the end of the second quarter, as a layup from Amorich, followed by a three-pointer from Salmeron cut their deficit down to 31-24 with 1:15 remaining in the half. The Black Knights (11-2 overall, 3-0 Patriot League) scored a layup right before the end of the half, as they led 33-24 at the half.
To open the third quarter, both teams traded baskets early in the quarter as the deficit remained in single digits for the Greyhounds. The Black Knights however went on a 7-2 run over the last three minutes of game time, as they retook a double-digit lead, as they led 53-38 going into the fourth quarter.
Army's offense continued to click early in the fourth quarter, as they extended their lead to 62-42 with 6:00 minutes remaining. Loyola would cut down their deficit down to 13 points, but could not cut the deficit any lower, as they fell to the visiting Black Knights, 70-55.
The Greyhounds will travel to in-state foe Navy on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM as they continue Patriot League play. They return to Reitz on Monday as they host American, which will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
