COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Loyola Maryland showed flashes of early-season promise despite falling 80-26 to No. 10 Maryland in the 2025–26 season opener Monday night at XFINITY Center.
Junior guard Kimmie Hicks led the Greyhounds with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the opening quarter that briefly gave Loyola an early lead. Lex Therien added seven rebounds and five points, while Avery Simmons chipped in five points off the bench.
Freshman forward Whitley Watkins scored five points and added two rebounds in her collegiate debut. 
Loyola started the game fast, as Kimmie Hicks knocked down a three-pointer on Loyola's second possession. Lex Therien added a basket on the following possession to take a 5-4 lead. 
After the Terrapins retook the lead with a three-pointer, Hicks knocked down her second three of the opening quarter to take a 8-7 lead. Maryland would find momentum, as they closed the first quarter on a 11-3 run.
The Greyhounds (0–1) battled the Terrapins early, trading leads six times in the first quarter before Maryland pulled away. Loyola's defense forced 18 Maryland turnovers and limited the Terrapins to 33% shooting in the fourth quarter.
Maryland (1–0) was led by Oluchi Okananwa's 18 points and Saylor Poffenbarger's 11 points, four assists and five steals.
Loyola opens its home schedule Friday night against Coppin State at Reitz Arena.
