BALTIMORE — Loyola Maryland erased a double‑digit deficit and closed with a dominant fourth quarter to beat Morgan State 65–58 on Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
Koi Sims anchored Loyola (4–7) by tying a career-high with 18 points and 15 rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting, powering a 32–6 advantage in paint scoring that steadily wore down the Bears. The Greyhounds trailed for the majority of the game, including trailing by 11 points halfway through the third quarter.
Loyola opened the fourth quarter fast, as Sims and Shaughnesse scored on the first two possessions to cut their deficit down to three points early in the quarter. Morgan State would answer with back to back three-pointer's, to maintain a six point lead.
From there, Loyola, led by Olivia Shaughness, outscored the Bears 15-2 over the final 5:36 of the fourth quarter, to close out the game.
Freshman guard Olivia Shaughnessy delivered a major spark off the bench, scoring 12 points on perfect 3‑for‑3 shooting, including 1-1 from three and 5-6 from the foul line, and adding four assists.
Amandine Amorich added 12 points and four made threes, while Cristina Garcia posted a career-best 11 points and five assists despite heavy defensive pressure. Loyola finished 46 percent from the field, while holding Morgan State to 33.3 percent shooting.
Morgan State (1–14) was led by Ja'la Bannerman's 22 points on six made threes, but the Bears' offense stalled late, shooting just 2-for-11 in the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds' defensive pressure forced five turnovers in the fourth quarter.
Loyola's push came with seven minutes left, when Sims scored inside, Shaughnessy converted at the line, and Amorich buried a wing three to cap an 11–0 run that gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the day. From there, Loyola's rebounding and strong defense closed it out.
With the win, it is the Greyhounds third-straight win and second-straight win while trailing by double-digits.
