Washington, D.C -- The Loyola University Maryland men's basketball team cut their deficit down to six points early in the second half, but American University used a 18-6 run to pull away from the Greyhounds, as they held on to win 72-51 on Saturday evening.
Milos Illic finished with a team-high 12 points in the game, while
Jordan Stiemke added 9 points on the evening. Veljko Illic and
Jacob Theodosiou each had 8 points in the game.
The Greyhounds (10-15 overall, 5-9 Patriot League) used a 6-0 run early in the second half as they cut their deficit down to six points, as they trailed 39-33 with 16:39 remaining in the half.
American responded with a run of their own, as they used a 8-2 run to retake a double-digit lead, as they lead 47-35 with 14:07 left in the second half.
American jumped out to a 62-44 lead with five minutes remaining, in large part to Matt Rogers, who had seven points during the run, as the Eagles (17-10 overall, 11-3 Patriot League) pulled away from the Greyhounds in the second half.
Loyola could could not cut into the American lead late, as they held on for the 72-51 win.
Matt Rogers had 22 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Eagles on the evening.
The Greyhounds started the game strong, as they used a early 9-0 run to jump out to a early 9-3 lead.
Loyola's strong start continued in the opening half, as
David Brown III knocked down a three-pointer with 9:48 remaining, as Loyola took a 18-12 lead.
American responded with a 18-2 run over a five minute period, as they jumped out to a 30-20 lead with 4:12 remaining in the first half. Loyola would close out the first half with a 5-2 run, as they went into halftime trailing 34-27.
The Greyhounds will remain on the road on Wednesday, as they will travel up to Boston to face the Terriers.
