BALTIMORE –
Kenan Everhart scored with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to move Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse into a 7-7 tie with fourth-ranked University of Maryland, but the Terrapins scored 1:04 into the extra period for an 8-7 non-conference victory at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Everhart, who earlier in the game scored his first collegiate goal, restarted on the end-line after a Loyola timeout with 8.1 seconds to go. He got a step on his defender and shot an overhand high-to-low that found the net with 2.2 on the clock, drawing the Greyhounds even.
Maryland (2-0 overall) won the faceoff to start overtime and settled into six-on-six offense. Matthew Keegan had a shot that missed wide left 51 seconds into the game, and on the restart, he dodged from behind the cage to get a line for the game-winning goal.
Loyola led for much of the game after the teams had a slow offensive start to the contest.
Daniel Kelly put the Terrapins on the board with 3:24 to play, but that would be the quarter's only goal.
Max Watkinson made seven saves in goal for the Greyhounds during the quarter in which the teams combined for 15 saves, 11 by Maryland.
Everhart would get Loyola (0-2) in the scoring column less than four minutes into the second quarter when he scored his first collegiate goal on a tally like the one late in the fourth quarter. This time, he dodged to the goalkeeper's left, and his overhand lefty shot went in to make it 1-1.
That kicked off a 3-0 Greyhounds' run that would expand to 5-1.
Matthew Minicus scored at 9:54 in the second quarter when he dodged his defender one-on-one from the right wing. He ran past a slide, drew a Maryland flag for a push to the back and scored while diving in front of the crease.
He was a part of the next Loyola goal that came in transition. Minicus caught the ball off the clear and circled back toward midfield. He threw to
Luke Murphy who was running into the box, and Murphy used his momentum to break into space and scored at 8:37, pushing the Greyhounds up, 3-1.
Eric Spanos broke the run with an unassisted goal for Maryland at 5:30, but the Greyhounds would get another back before the end of the half.
With time winding down before the break, Murphy threw through the defense to
Henry Haberman on the crease where he shot-faked and scored with nine ticks to go, making Loyola's lead 4-2.
The Greyhounds would then post the only goal of the third quarter.
Brady West restarted at the end-line and scored unassisted with 7:34 left in the frame to make the lead three once again.
Loyola would hold Maryland scoreless for almost 22 minutes before Spanos scored off a Zach Whittier assist 1:43 into the fourth quarter.
He then added an extra-man goal with a face-dodge to get free in the left alley, and Braden Erska added another for the Terrapins with 10:00 to play, tying the game at 5-5. Spanos scored his fourth 49 seconds later, and Maryland had its first lead since early in the second quarter.
Remi Reynolds had a defense-to-offense effort less than four minutes later that would get the Greyhounds level on the scoreboard. He desticked a Maryland offensive player, picked up the ground ball and cleared it himself. He then crow-hopped into a left-handed shot that got past the Terrapins goalie and tied the game at 5:31.
The teams traded turnovers over the next two minutes, and Kelly caught an Erska pass to score with 3:11 on the clock, giving Maryland a one-goal advantage.
Loyola won the ensuing faceoff, and Everhart had a shot saved by Maryland's Logan McNaney with 2:20 to go. After a Terrapins' timeout, Watkinson saved a Keegan shot, and Loyola cleared the ball through short-stick
Michael Callahan.
Minicus had a shot from the top go high, and the Greyhounds called timeout with 8.1 to play, setting up the final sequences.
Everhart led the Greyhounds with two goals, while Minicus and Murphy each had a goal and an assist.
Reynolds had a career-high five caused turnovers, and he joined fellow close defenders
Jake Wilson and
Joe Houlihan, and long-stick midfielder
Chase Gregory, with four ground balls each.
The Greyhounds will continue their homestand on Saturday, February 15, with a 12 noon game against Johns Hopkins University in the
Battle of Charles Street.
