BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland women's secured a narrow 4-3 victory over Morgan State in a non-conference women's tennis match at the McClure Tennis Center, but the Bears took a 7-0 decision in the men's match.
The Greyhounds women opened strong in doubles, capturing the first point with wins on the top two courts.
Lauren Manwiller and
Emma Roeck defeated Hannah Smith and Lauryn Hall, 6-3, at No. 1, while
Jessica Bodewes and
Christine Richiez earned a 6-1 victory over Tyler Williams and Julia Jeffrey at No. 2. Morgan State avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 3, where Aleksandra Edokimova and Marta Serra Carles beat
Sophia Moore and
Addison Kemerer.
In singles, Loyola earned victories at the top two spots and at No. 6 to clinch the match. Richiez held off Edokimova, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1, and Manwiller followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Smith at No. 2.
Emi Shivkumar sealed the match for Loyola at No. 6, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, (10-5) victory over Stefania Moysiadi.
Morgan State battled back with wins in the middle of the lineup. Hall came from behind to defeat
Elena Hartley, 3-6, 6-3, (10-7) at No. 3, while Jeffrey topped
Mia Matriccino, 6-2, 7-6 (3), at No. 4. Serra added a win at No. 5, beating Bodewes 6-4, 7-5.
The Bears opened the men's match by claiming the doubles point. Mikeal Carpenter and Makkijha Brown had a 6-0 win over
Ryan Boland and
Jorge Quintana at No. 1, and Anthony Parris and Antonio Santos secured the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3. Loyola picked up its lone doubles win at No. 2, where
George Cavo and
Gilberto Rivera-Gordillo defeated Yessine Kerouat and Majdi Ben Abdelwahed, 6-3.
In singles play, Morgan State swept all six matches. At the top spot, Carpenter defeated
Noah Castillo 6-0, 6-2. Brown outlasted Cavo at No. 2 in a third-set super tiebreak, winning 6-0, 3-6, (10-3). Abdelwahed took a 6-4, 6-3 win over
Blake Edwards at No. 3, and Niles Rachal followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against
Nick Lawliss at No. 4.
Kerouat held off
Cristian Pemueller at No. 5, 7-6 (4), 6-0, while Mohamed Ridha Ghettas completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Boland at No. 6.
