BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Recent Loyola University Maryland graduate
Patrick Hayburn '25 was named the 2025 Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award which is given to the top student-athlete representing all men's sports in the conference.
Hayburn culminated his Loyola tenure last month by graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration with a double major in finance and information systems and data analytics.
He was one of eight Loyola graduates to earn the school's Whelan Medal that is presented to those with the top grade-point average of all graduating students.
Hayburn's honor marks the seventh Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for a Greyhounds student-athlete since Loyola joined the conference in 2013-14. He joins Joe Fletcher (men's lacrosse, 2014), Franz Rassman (men's basketball, 2016), Kristen Yanchoris (women's lacrosse, 2019), Elli Kluegel (women's lacrosse, 2021 and 2022) and Aidan Olmstead (2022).
"We are proud to call Patrick one of our own and know that his success will only continue as an alumnus," said Loyola Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics
Donna M. Woodruff. "Patrick joins an esteemed list of scholars and athletes who have represented the Patriot League and Loyola University Maryland at the highest levels and who have earned recognition as Scholar-Athlete of the Year."
Hayburn's academic accomplishments mirrored his success in the pool for the Loyola men's swimming and diving team. He received the John Mohler Award, an honor given yearly at Loyola to the male senior student-athlete who best combines athletic excellence and academic achievement.
He was a three-time All-Patriot League honoree, picking up first-team recognition in 2023 and 2025 and second-team laurels in 2024; he was a three-time Academic All-Patriot League recipient, garnering the sport's Scholar-Athlete of the Year this season.
"Patrick is a tremendous representative of what the Patriot League stands for—excellence in the classroom and excellence in athletic competition," said Loyola head swimming and diving coach
Brian Loeffler. "I am thrilled that he has been selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is well deserving of this as a great ambassador of the League, Loyola and our swimming and diving program."
Hayburn was Loyola's top point-scorer at this year's 2025 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships with 75, helping the Greyhounds to a third-place finish, matching their highest since joining the conference.
He helped lead the Greyhounds to the title in the 200 medley relay, took second in the 100 butterfly, was sixth in the 50 freestyle and finished seventh in the 100 backstroke. He was also a member of the second-place 400 freestyle relay team and the 400 medley relay that was third.
Hayburn earned Dean's List honors all eight semesters at Loyola and also had internships for Leadline, Inc., and Real Projectives. He was the vice president of Loyola's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2023-24 and served in many community service opportunities during his time at Loyola.
