Baltimore -- The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team (1–0–1) opened their home slate, defeating Saint Peter's University (0–1–1) by a score of 2–0 at Ridley Athletic Complex.
From the opening whistle, Loyola set the tone early, as just 86 seconds into the match, freshman forward Taryn Buckley found the back of the net, capitalizing on a corner kick, for her firest career goal, as Brigid McElderry picked up her first assist as a Greyhound. The early strike energized the Greyhounds and forced Saint Peter's to play from behind for the entirety of the contest.
The Greyhounds doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Savannah Manset delivered her first career goal, assisted by Francesca Khachatourians, as Manset's left-footed shot got passed the Peacocks' goalkeeper.
The game was delayed for roughly two hours due to a weather delay during halftime.
Loyola's defensive unit was equally impressive, holding Saint Peter's to just two shots on goal across 90 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer recorded two saves and notched her first clean sheet of the season.
The Greyhounds outshot the Peacocks 15–7, including a 12–5 advantage in the first half. Loyola also earned six corner kicks compared to Saint Peter's three. Possession numbers reflected Loyola's control, as the Greyhounds maintained 60 percent of the ball throughout the match.
Loyola will return on the road on Thursday, as they will face William and Mary at 7:00 PM on August 21.
