WASHINGTON — Loyola University Maryland earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw on the road against George Washington on Sunday afternoon, with freshman forward Taryn Buckley providing the Greyhounds' breakthrough in the second half.
Buckley put Loyola ahead in the 49th minute with her second goal of the season, finishing an unassisted chance that capped the Greyhounds' early second-half surge. The Revolutionaries responded in the 77th minute when Rose Virgran converted a penalty kick to level the match.
The Greyhounds (3-2-3) controlled much of the first half, outshooting George Washington 9-3 and holding a 64% possession advantage before halftime. Loyola finished with a 13-12 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Savannah Manset and Buckley kept pressure on the Revolutionaries' back line, combining for eight shots, while goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer tallied three saves in 90 minutes.
George Washington (3-2-3) leaned on keeper Kate Silverstein, who made four saves on the afternoon.
The Greyhounds return home to open Patriot League play on September 20 against Holy Cross at Ridley Athletic Complex.
