BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland's women's soccer team controlled much of the possession and tempo on Saturday afternoon, as they rallied late to earn a 1-1 draw with Holy Cross in its Patriot League opener at Ridley Athletic Complex.
After falling behind in the 68th minute on a Crusaders strike, the Greyhounds answered just five minutes later. Sophomore forward Ava Blizzard delivered her first collegiate goal in the 74th minute, slotting home the equalizer off a well-placed assist from defender Riley Kennel.
The Greyhounds dictated much of the match, holding a commanding 62 percent of possession and outshooting Holy Cross 11-9. Loyola also put six shots on frame, forcing five saves from Crusaders goalkeeper Aubrey Haesche.
Goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer remained steady for Loyola, anchoring a defense that limited Holy Cross to a single shot on target. Loyola's back line, held the Crusaders attack in check on the afternoon, limiting the Crusaders to just one shot on goal over 90 minutes.
The result moves Loyola to 3-2-4 overall and 0-0-1 in Patriot League play, while Holy Cross moves to 3-4-3 overall and 0-0-1 in Patriot League play.
Loyola continues Patriot League play next Saturday, as they will travel to face preseason favorite Boston.
