Strong Second Half Rally Falls Short for Men's Soccer of Friday Night

BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland outshot American University 6-1 in the second half on Friday night, but the Greyhounds could not find the game-trying goal in the second half, as the Eagles won 1-0 in a Patriot League matchup.

The Greyhounds outshot the Eagles 11-7 overall and owned a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, controlling much of the second half. Loyola tested American goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts multiple times, including late chances from Richie Nichols and Charlie Herley that forced saves and blocks, but couldn't find the equalizer.

American scored the lone goal in the 43rd minute when Troy Elgersma scored off of a assist from Taku Takahashi on a long free kick. From there, Loyola's back line, led by Jordy Luchies and Oscar Halls, clamped down, holding the Eagles to just one shot after halftime.

Richie Nichols and Jack Endacott led the team in shots on the night, helping lead the Greyhounds attack. Dylan van der Walt anchored the Greyhounds in goal, playing a steady 90 minutes while directing the defensive unit.

The Greyhounds return to action Sept. 23 with a road trip to Saint Joseph's for a non-conference matchup.
