BALTIMORE — Charlie Herley scored late in the first half and Loyola University Maryland's defense held firm the rest of the way, as the Greyhounds earned a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Herley netted his third goal of the season in the 40th minute, finishing off a pass from a free kick from defender Jack Endacott to put Loyola (2-6-1, 1-2-0 Patriot League) in front. The strike proved to be the difference, as the Greyhounds secured their first conference win of the year.
Loyola outshot the Crusaders 13-7 and controlled the run of play, dominating possession with a 62% advantage. Herley led the Greyhounds with four attempts, while Endacott, Ryan Andrews and Matthew Takawira each added offensive pressure.
On the other end, goalkeeper Dylan van der Walt turned away three shots to preserve the shutout. The Greyhounds' back line, anchored by Endacott, Eddie Smith and Kayin Oladinni, limited Holy Cross (3-4-3, 0-1-2) to just three shots on target.
Loyola also showed discipline in key moments, weathering a physical match that saw 33 combined fouls. The Greyhounds earned five corner kicks on the afternoon as they limited the Crusaders' chances.
Loyola returns to action next Sunday, as they travel up to Boston to face the Terriers.
