HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over Colgate on Saturday, as Betzael Contreras scored the decisive goal in the second half and Hannah Goetzer delivered a clean sheet to lead the Greyhounds.
After a scoreless first half at Beyer-Small Field, Contreras broke through in the 56th minute, finishing a pass from Savannah Manset at 55:26 to give Loyola the lead. The goal was Contreras' second of the season, and second in as many games.
The Greyhounds (3-2-9 overall, 3-1-2 Patriot League) relied on a strong defensive effort to preserve the advantage against a Colgate side that generated 17 shots, including five on target. Goetzer made five saves over 90 minutes to secure the shutout and earn the victory.
Loyola weathered pressure throughout the opening half, with Goetzer making four saves to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard. Colgate recorded eight shots before halftime, but the Greyhounds remained organized defensively and entered the break in a scoreless tie.
Contreras' goal shifted the momentum in Loyola's favor early in the second half. Manset provided the assist off a great solo run, helping the Greyhounds capitalize on one of their opportunities after a competitive opening 45 minutes.
Loyola finished with eight shots, three on target, and four corner kicks. Colgate held a 58% share of possession and earned five corners, but the Greyhounds' defense held firm when it mattered most, limiting the Raiders to zero goals.
The victory marked another important result for Loyola in Patriot League play, as the Greyhounds continued their conference campaign with a disciplined performance on both ends of the field.
