BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland turned in a resilient defensive performance Tuesday night, holding Penn scoreless in a 0-0 draw at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds (2-8-2) limited the Quakers (4-1-3) to five shots on target. Loyola also maintained 51% possession and finished with four corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Felix Huebner provided a strong first-half effort, making three saves before Reese Mays took over in the second half. Mays recorded two saves, helping Loyola complete the shutout. The two goalkeepers combined for five saves.
Loyola came out with pressure of its own. Tyler Tucker forced a save from Penn goalkeeper Phillip Falcon III in the 22nd minute, while Tyler Flynn and Jeremiah McGuire each recorded shots during the match.
The Greyhounds generated their best chance of the second half in the 63rd minute, when Cesare D'Amico put a shot on frame that Falcon saved. Loyola continued to push late, earning corner kicks in the 81st and 85th minutes. Lukas Cortes had a shot blocked in the 85th, and Kayin Oladinni followed with a shot that sailed high.
Penn threatened in the final minutes, but Mays came up with a key save on Connor Dawson in the 88th minute. Loyola's defense then held firm through the final whistle, securing the scoreless result.
Penn finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, but Loyola's defensive organization prevented the Quakers from turning their opportunities into goals. The Greyhounds also finished with a 51%-49% edge in possession.
