GOODYEAR, Ariz. –
Eli Spaulding eagled the second and 11th holes at Palm Valley Golf Club on Sunday and finished at 4-under 68 to help the Loyola University Maryland golf team tie for the team lead after 18 holes at the 14th-Annual Loyola Intercollegiate.
All four counting players shot even-par or lower Sunday for the Greyhounds who shot 8-under 280 and are tied Richmond. South Dakota and Denver are a shot back and tied for third, and North Carolina State is fifth.
Diego Neira is a shot back of Spaulding at 3-under 69, and
Gustavo Rangel shot 1-under 71 while
Liam Moloney finished at even-par 72.
Spaulding bogeyed his fourth hole, the par-5 ninth at the course, but he got the stroke back with a birdie at the 10th before eagling the 540-yard 11th hole. He played the next two holes at even with a bogey on 12 and birdie the following before posting six-straight pars.
He came to the course's second hole, his 15th of the first round, at 2-under, but he carded a three on the 515-yard, par-5 for his second eagle of the day. Spaulding then rolled in pars on his final three holes to finish at 68 in a tie for fifth.
Neira doubled his first hole – the course's seventh – to fall behind early, but he had five birdies over his final 17 holes to tie for 11th at 69.
Rangel is tied for 24th, along with teammate
Lorenzo Sanz who is playing as an individual and shot 1-under 71, as well. Moloney is tied for 38th, and
Jackson Roman shot 2-over 74 to tie for 64th.
The Greyhounds and other teams will open play in the second round in a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start on Monday.
