HAMILTON, N.Y. –
Mason Cook scored a career-high eight goals Saturday, netting four in the fourth quarter alone, to propel Loyola University Maryland to a 13-11 road win in its Patriot League opener at Colgate University.
The Raiders took an 11-10 lead with 8:26 left in regulation on an Andrew Kiefer goal, but just nine seconds later Loyola equalized off the faceoff.
Mason Graves won the restart, and nine seconds later,
Matthew Minicus threw to Cook for a transition goal that tied the game at 11-11.
The Minicus-to-Cook connection would join up for more scoring later in the quarter.
Cook gave Loyola the lead off a Minicus assist with 5:18 on the clock, and the pair connected again for a 13-11 lead with 1:31 left.
Loyola won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over with 69 seconds on the clock. After play restarted, Colgate's Freddy Fowler was doubled by a pair of Greyhounds defenders who put the ball on the ground, and
Vinnie Trujillo came up with the loose ball, enabling Loyola to run out the clock.
The last time a Loyola player scored eight or more goals also came against Colgate. Kevin Lindley tallied eight versus the Raiders in a March 30, 2019, victory at Loyola. His eight goals on Saturday are tied for the most in a game this season by a NCAA Division I player entering the weekend.
Colgate opened the game's scoring when Casey Quinson tallied an extra-man goal 5:08 into the first, but Loyola came back to record the next three.
Kenan Everhart twice fed Cook for goals at 7:14 and 5:26 in the first, and then
Matthew Minicus hit the high, left corner off an Everhart assist to put Loyola up, 3-1, with 3:44 left in the frame.
Colgate got back within one on an Emmet Crotty score with 1:27 left in the frame, but Everhart was on the scoring end of a
Luke Murphy assist with 18 ticks left, and Loyola led, 4-2. The Raiders, however, scored off the ensuing faceoff with a John Carrabine goal to make it 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
The Raiders scored that stanza's first two goals, and a Patty Eldredge scored at 10:54 to put Colgate up, 5-4. Cook scored the next two for Loyola – on man-up at 9:37 with a
Kyle McCarthy assist and then at 8:55 off a
Will Musgrove feed – and Loyola led again, 6-5. Minicus pushed the advantage to two with a goal at 5:27 off Everhart's fourth assist.
Colgate, however, reeled off three goals in a row to close the first half with an 8-7 lead.
The third quarter was scoreless for nearly 12 minutes until Hunter Drouin found the net for Colgate, giving it a 9-7 lead.
Chase Gregory brought Loyola back within one by stepping down on a shot to score his second in as many weeks.
Will McCulloch then evened the score at 9-9 with an extra-man goal with 48 ticks left in the third.
Colgate went up a goal, 10-9, on Quinson's fourth of the day at 13:18 in the fourth quarter, but Cook took a
Miles Halter feed off a Greyhounds faceoff win and tied the game again 14 seconds later.
Kiefer put the Raiders up, 11-10 with an unassisted goal at 8:26, leading to Cook's three goals to close the game.
Minicus finished the game with seven points, scoring twice to go with a career-high-tying five assists. Everhart had a career-high five points with a goal and career-best four assists.
The Greyhounds won eight of 11 faceoffs in the second half.
Mason Graves finished the game 7 of 12, and
Carson Hall was 6 of 11. Hall had a team-best five ground balls.
Max Watkinson made 16 saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
Loyola will be back in action when it plays its first home game of the season on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m., against Towson University at Ridley Athletic Complex.
