BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland trimmed a double-digit deficit to four midway through the fourth quarter, but the College of the Holy Cross answered with a 14-0 run down the stretch to secure a 66-48 victory Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds (12-16, 8-9 Patriot League) showed resilience after trailing by as many as 15 in the third quarter, cutting the margin to 52-48 with 7:57 remaining. Kimmie Hicks fueled the surge with a pair of baskets in transition, and Amandine Amorich added a driving layup to cap a 6-0 spurt that brought the home crowd to its feet.
Holy Cross (19-9, 13-4) responded with an 14-0 run to regain control.
Loyola was led by Hicks, who scored 16 points, and Lex Therien, who added 12 points. Amorich chipped in nine points, including a 3-pointer late in the third quarter that helped the Greyhounds close within 10 entering the final period.
After falling behind 23-15 at the end of the first quarter, Loyola battled in the second behind Hicks' aggressiveness attacking the rim and contributions from the bench. The Greyhounds outscored Holy Cross 12-10 in the third quarter, holding the Crusaders to 33 percent shooting in the period while forcing five turnovers.
Holy Cross was led by Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly who had 21 points and Kendall Eddy who had 18 points.
Loyola will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they travel to face Navy.
