COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Loyola University Maryland's
Luke Murphy his second goal of the game scored 5:09 into the second half on Saturday, pulling Loyola within a pair of No. 1 University of Maryland, 7-5, but an Eric Spanos goal 36 seconds later kicked off a 7-0 Terrapins run that turned the season opener for both teams into a 19-10 Maryland win indoors at the Jones-Hill House.
Leo Johnson scored three of his game-high five goals during the run that saw Maryland (1-0 overall) take a 14-5 lead when Chris Lyons scored with one second on the clock at the end of the third quarter.
Loyola came back with three goals in a row to start the fourth from its starting attack of
Kenan Everhart,
Matthew Minicus and
Mason Cook, but 14-8 was as close as the Greyhounds (0-1) would draw in the final period.
The Greyhounds opened the game with the first goal on an unassisted tally by Everhart at 11:03 in the first quarter, and Maryland's Spencer Ford evened it with a goal on the crease at 6:37.
Murphy scored his first, unassisted off a dodge, at 3:54, but Maryland's Elijah Stobaugh tied the game at 2-2 with 20 seconds left in the first quarter.
Johnson gave Maryland its first lead of the game with a goal at 11:11 in the second quarter, but Loyola jumped back in front with the next two goals.
Brady Quinn scored unassisted at 7:27, and
Mason Cook shot while falling to score on a
Bruno Chapman run, capping transition for the Greyhounds at 5:15.
Lyons, however, came back with a pair of goals over the next two minutes, and Johnson scored with 1:16 left in the half to stake the Terrapins to a 6-4 advantage at the break.
Cook finished with a team-high three goals, while Everhart had two goals and one assist, and Murphy scored twice.
Matthew Minicus,
Henry Haberman and Quinn added the Greyhounds other goals, while
Will Musgrove,
Mitch Kavey and Chapman all had assists.
Max Watkinson made 12 saves for Loyola in goal.
The Greyhounds will be back in action on Saturday, February 14, with a 1 p.m. game at Johns Hopkins University.
