Baltimore -- Loyola University Maryland controlled the game from the opening tip as they led wire-to-wire over Boston University, rolling to a 49-40 Patriot League victory Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
With seven rebounds in today's game, Lex Therien broke the Patriot League and Loyola career rebounds record, as she now sits at 1,204 career rebounds.
The Greyhounds (10-13, 6-6) the entire game, as they scored the game's first 10 points and built their advantage to as many as 15 in the third quarter while keeping Boston at bay throughout the second half
Sydney Bass paced Loyola with 9 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, while Amandine Amorich added 14 points off the bench on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting performance. Kimmie Hicks contributed 10 points, including a perfect 6 for 6 at the free-throw line.
Boston University (7-16, 3-9) was led by Anastasiia Semenova's 13 points.
Loyola's defense set the tone immediately. After Bass opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Koi Sims and Olivia Shaughnessy followed with baskets during a 10-0 burst that forced an early Terriers timeout. Boston shot just 3 of 13 in the first quarter, and the Greyhounds carried a 13-6 edge into the second.
The Terriers chipped away before halftime and briefly pulled within one late in the second quarter, but Amorich beat the buzzer with a jumper to send Loyola into the break up 23-20.
Loyola created the separation in the third quarter, as Hicks hit four free throws, Sims converted off a steal, and Bass buried another 3 to cap a 13-2 run that pushed the margin to 32-20. Amorich later added a three-point play and another triple as the lead grew to 15.
Boston never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Greyhounds finished with 35 rebounds to Boston's 21. They also held the Terriers to 16-44 (36.4%) shooting, while also limiting them to 2-13 (15.4%) from three-point range.
Loyola finished the game shooting 18-44 (40.9%), while shooting 6-15 (40%) from three.
Loyola will look to improve on their momentum, as they will host Lafayette next Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
