BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland reeled off three-straight goals in the first quarter to tie 13th-ranked Georgetown at 3-3, but the Hoyas scored with less than two seconds left in the period and then added five in a row to start the second to go on to a 14-7 non-conference win Tuesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Hoyas (3-3 overall) took a 3-0 lead just over eight minutes into the game when Rory Connor scored with 6:52 on the first-quarter clock, but Loyola would tie the game within the next four-plus minutes.
Mason Cook put the Greyhounds (4-4) on the board with a goal off a
Matthew Minicus goal at 5:35, and then
Brady Quinn made it 3-2 with an unassisted goal, dodging from behind the crease to score at 2:58.
Cook added his second of three in the game with a goal 21 seconds later after the Greyhounds won the faceoff and
Will Musgrove found him on the left-side for a shot.
His second of the night tied the game at 3-3, and the game appeared headed to the second quarter knotted, but Connor scored in transition with less than two seconds left to push Georgetown ahead.
Jack Schubert scored for the Hoyas three minutes into the second, and then Jake Bickel added back-to-back goals to make it a 7-3 lead.
Rory Connor and Liam Connor scored at 7:33 and 5:26 in the second, pushing the Hoyas up six, 9-3, before Cook added his third of the half off a
Luke Murphy assist with 54 seconds left in the stanza.
Both teams scored once in the third quarter with Loyola's goal by
Will McCulloch coming on extra-man with 5:05 on the clock to make it 10-5 in Georgetown's favor.
Miles Halter scored 23 ticks into the fourth for Loyola, but Bickel added his third of the night at 12:39, and Georgetown was back up five.
Minicus caught and scored inside at 9:55, and Loyola was within four, 11-7, but Georgetown scored the game's last three goals.
Cook had a team-high four points with his seventh hat trick or better of the season, scoring three times and assisting on another against the Hoyas.
Minicus scored once and had an assist, and Murphy dished out two assists.
Carson Hall went 14 of 17 on faceoffs, tying his career-high with nine groundballs for the Greyhounds.
The game was the Greyhounds' final non-conference tilt of the regular-season. They will jump back into Patriot League play Saturday, March 21, with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Bucknell University.
